Natsumi Petri

Natsumi Petri considers herself lucky, for her parents started her in piano lessons at five years old. She’s been learning and practicing ever since. “Music is like magic,” she says, noting “playing music gives me so much happiness! As soon as I start to practice my piano or violin, all the negative thoughts go away.” Helping other people find that joy is why she loves to teach.

She believes her job to be more than just sharing knowledge: she seeks to help her students enjoy the learning process and strives to give each student motivation and spontaneity so that they can enjoy playing music for themselves, which, to her, is the most important thing.

Her early teachers were college professors in Japan, where she was raised, who gave her a solid foundation of the basics. After moving to Texas, she went on to meet and learn from many excellent performers and professors at St. Philip’s College, UTSA, and Texas Lutheran University.

Natsumi holds a BA in Music from Texas Lutheran University with piano and violin as her primary and secondary instruments, respectively. While at TLU, she was accepted as a 2nd violinist for the Texas-Mid Symphony, which she still plays with. She also performs with the Valley Symphony in McAllen and enjoys playing in community orchestras such as Symphony Viva, Salterelli String Orchestra, Lone Star Philharmonic, and UIW’s Orchestra of the Incarnate Word. She also teaches at the Lackland AFB community and youth centers.
