Chaney Rutherford

Guitar Instructor

Chaney’s love for music took root in Uvalde, Texas, in 1984, when his parents enrolled him in violin lessons. At only four years old, he still remembers the excitement of learning a song and the joy it brought to those for whom he performed. Although the violin was fun and challenging, he soon took an interest in the guitar and has not put it down since. Along the way, he has studied various styles of guitar including classical, bluegrass, western swing, fingerstyle, and praise and worship and has played professionally in and around the San Antonio area for more than ten years.

Chaney Rutherford is currently attending his senior year at Texas State University , completing his B.A. in music with an emphasis in classical guitar performance. While attending the University, he has also been involved in numerous guitar quartets, jazz combos, played violin with the Texas State Orchestra, and has performed twice at Austin’s Guitars Galore Festival.

Mr. Rutherford offers a balanced approach to guitar instruction that combines music theory with ear training. In this way, students learn to teach themselves by understanding how music “works” in relation to scales, chord progressions, key changes, etc. He is a firm believer in practice and spends a lot of time working with the mechanics of the right and left hand, trying to impress a sense of accuracy, cleanliness, and dynamics into the student’s playing. He encourages anyone, regardless of age or skill level, to come and find the joy that music brings.
